This science fiction novel is the description of humanity and of industrial civilization, a few days before their annihilation by atomic war. This is a text that addresses the subject of the destruction of books, but also that of men by the fire, whether natural or nuclear. Ray Bradbury has published this literary work in 1953, during McCarthyism and nuclear arms race between the USA and the USSR. Behind the concern posed by the censorship in Western countries, because of the lack of freedom of expression and the influence that society exerts on consumer consciousness of the masses through mass media, submitting, daily human reason, to brainwashing by the media blitz, advertising, content, stupid TV shows, and disinformation news programs, the author is also concerned about the Apocalypse, through the scheduled end of humanity, which consumes time and devours it like a fire, from its birth to its most advanced development. How many centuries and centuries of history and evolution, contained in literary works, doing what we are today, can they be reduced to nil by the time fire and destruction of atomic planned military?

Montag, the hero of this story is a pyromaniac firefighter, serving the policy of the government militia, responsible for destroying all the books and to challenge the subversives. To protect society firefighters are charged with burning the books, instead of extinguishing fires in homes. Any creative process has become subversive. The mass consciousness is anesthetized, under the influence of mass media, that standardize ways of thinking and condition human behavior, standards consumption of industrial and commercial society, so that individuals have lost the ability to take an interest in books. Mental laziness has allowed the prohibition of books, which has imposed itself in a natural way, without resistance. The few people who read more are isolated and tracked as abnormal that represent a threat to social order. People living in semi-conscious in a virtual reality without further interest that the consumer and media divertissents. Yet all around this artificial happiness, coupe and the true nature of reality, the world is in a more than dramatic. The 3 rd World War was about to throw the whole earth in a nuclear Apocalypse, while "information" on the news keep viewers in a comatose state of sleep by talking about economic growth and material welfare . Montag has the opportunity to open his consciousness to the world's problems just days before the outbreak of war illuminates. He first discovers the existence of a community of men and books, living on the margins of society, with Clarissa, a young girl resistant driven by a passion for books. These books are men living books, because they learn by heart each a different book, to keep knowledge of the world. During an operation, Montag is confronted with the amazing spectacle of a woman who decides to die a martyr in his home, surrounded by his books, in sacrifice by the fire before firefighters in uniform. Montag wonders what the interest words in these books may well be for us to feel the desire to die for them? He succumbed to that temptation and starts for the first time to read. Montag is soon terminated by his own wife, whose mind is completely washed away by television and making excessive use of antidepressants. He finds himself public enemy number 1 and must flee for his life. After a lengthy manhunt Montag is saved from the waters, like Moses, and joined the community of free men. It is a rebirth, he discovered all these individuals who have chosen freedom sometimes risking imprisonment or death. This will, after the blitzkrieg, the apostles of the new nascent humanity, because they are repositories of knowledge of all mankind. When a man dies book is part of human consciousness that fades. Montag has a choice to learn by heart in two books: "The Church", or "the Apocalypse of St. John in the Bible. When nuclear war breaks out, a purifying fire invades everything, Montag reads the following passage from the Apocalypse: "On both sides of the river was the tree of life which bears twelve fruits, and yields its fruit every month, and leaves of this tree are to heal the nations. " Yes said Montag is what he learns at midday ... As in the myth of the phoenix that rises from its own ashes after being consumed by fire, mankind reborn, rebuilds, and buried the war forever.
