Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies ( Lord of the Flies) is a novel the English author William Golding written in 1954 that shows the fragility of civilization. We can describe this novel naturalist. Indeed, he describes the regressive course of children left to themselves (see below).

A plane carrying exclusively from boys English high society during the flight crashed on a desert island . The driver and accompanying adults die. Left to themselves in wilderness and paradise, the many surviving children try to organize and reproduce the social patterns that have been inculcated. But soon the veneer cracks, the fragile society shatters and leaves gradually replaced by a tribal organization , wild and violent built around a charismatic leader and a rudimentary religion. Sacrifices human manhunt, bloody wars: civilization disappears in favor of a return to a state close to the animal that the children most vulnerable or most of their pay reasonable life.

In France, this novel is often considered a children's book and regularly studied in primary or college. However, its savage violence, raw and sensual is a book difficult and confusing. The fineness of its analysis and the quality of his writing are also a work in itself.

Abstract [edit ]

A plane transports young English children aged 6 to 15 crashes on a seemingly deserted island. No adult survives, and children find themselves alone in this new world. Ralph, who survived almost teenager, meets Piglet (Piggy in the original), and fragile child obese. Together they find a conch , large shell that produces a powerful low note when blowing it. The noise attracts other children survivors who gather them all under the sign of the conch. The shell then becomes a symbol of organization and power. Ralph introduces a rule organizing the flow of speech: the one who holds the conch holds speech.

Then comes Jack, the head of a control : A fast friendship develops between two young boys, Ralph and Jack. The power is not challenged by Ralph and Jack is appointed leader of a group of hunters, responsible for providing food to the group. Others are responsible for maintaining the fire, while small involved as they can and want the rest of the island.

However, little by little rivalry between the two heads appear and worsen over days. Jack loves adventure and exhilaration hunting, he does not appreciate the constraints and responsibilities involved in the organization headed by Ralph. He eventually break away and gradually the children join him one by one: together they create a tribal society around Jack who seize power for themselves. However dependence Piglet, which allows the glasses to light the fire and remains loyal to Ralph, crystallizes a land conflict between the two rival companies.

Parallel develops a cult primary to a kind of deity symbolized by a bloody pig's head planted on a stake. Jack uses the fear of monster glimpsed in the hilltop to justify the worship of the idol. Only the sage Simon has the courage to go to the top to see that there is no beast, only the dead body of a parachutist dropped into the rocks. But when it goes down at dusk to provide the new, party orgy is in full swing in the dark monster Simon is a partner, children excited and half in a trance fell upon him to beat him with sticks. It will not survive.

This crime - in which Ralph and Piglet have themselves participated, took in the excitement of the festival - galvanize Camp Jack and gives him a sort of collective moral foundation. They (camp Jack) organized a commando unit and managed to steal the glasses Piglet. After killing Piglet, they chase the latest Ralph companions for jail or back to their camp. They then organize an extensive search to kill Ralph that lurks in the jungle. Jack then decides to set fire to the forest to bring out of hiding the fugitive, after a chase where children chase Ralph uttering wild cries, they come before a group of sailors aback adults who come landing on the island. After a moments hesitation, the children collapse in tears.

Analysis [ edit]

sociological analysis , anthropological and philosophical William Golding shows in this fine novel is dark and pessimistic civilization is a veneer that does not help much and as soon as Humans are left to themselves, their freedom is the face of savagery , the superstition and violence . The author deals a final blow at the end of the novel when the children finally recovered by the crew of a battleship around, collapsing in tears: he shows how man flees his own freedom , he hastened to put themselves in the hands of a superior entity as soon as he could.

Symbolic Analysis [edit ]

Moreover, the novel can be analyzed at an angle symbolic , each character representing forces or sociological ideas different

Ralph, the main character, is the oldest child of the island with Jack, almost adolescent, trying to organize the group using a symbol strong communication and gathering (the conch ) may represent human attempts to rally egalitarian societies like democracy.

Jack, the fiery leader of the choir of children who gradually took control of the group, represents the power warrior, brutal and violent but charismatic and adventurous side as opposed to the binding of democratic organization.

Roger, the second of Jack in the new hierarchy, represents the gross cruelty and disturbing, the pleasure of inflicting pain or killing the growing fascism in the shadow of power warrior.

Piglet, the obese, whose intellectual and fragile glasses are used to make fire is the know and knowledge, but also dependence and weakness. Despised by the power warrior, it is nevertheless vital: the fire he is able to create is the ultimate symbol of power. The instrument of this power, glasses, ends up being stolen by Jack and their owners crushed by a rock pushed of a cliff.

It sometimes gives the work a range Freudian Ralph would Me, Piglet the superego and Jack It [ref. necessary] .

Simon, the brave child who does not hesitate to challenge her fears is the wisdom and truth - He was the first among the children killed, sacrificed a party bloody orgy on the altar of superstition it was just about to destroy it by bringing the truth.
